When it comes to bus trailers, Barry Hall's reconstruction of the remains of London Routemaster RM997 take some beating. Alan Moore photographed it at the postponed South East Bus Festival in Kent in October and its story is among those in Harry Rosehill's quirky Routemasters of the Universe book (Reviews, December). As Harry explains, it's called Arthur the Bus in a nod to how Sir Tommy Steele pronounced the title of his musical Half a Sixpence. In other words, 'Arf a Routemaster is better than none. Even when, strictly, Fird the Bus might be a more accurate name. Owner Barry runs The Expeditional, a business selling the experience of driving a complete Routemaster in the safe environment of North Weald airfield in Essex. By the time he set eyes upon RM997, the brutal deed had already been done. The back end had been severed and incorporated into a property development in Yorkshire and the middle section was cannibalised for parts. |
