The 32-year-old park and ride scheme in Maidstone looks set to close in February. Run for most of its life as a fully-funded council contract, revenue risk was transferred to Arriva when the contract was last renewed in 2019. As a result, the impact of Covid-related falls in passenger numbers has lain with Arriva, which gave the council notice on its six year contract during December. The local press reported that the council had turned down a request from Arriva for around £25,000 to keep the service running until April, by which time it would potentially have been eligible for funding streams released as part of the National Bus Strategy. At its height, the service operated from four sites, requiring 11 vehicles on three services. However, the council sold one site and relinquished the lease on another, leaving just an east-west service between Willington Street, the town centre and London Road running on a fairly low headway. The peak frequency of every 20 minutes, requiring three buses, is reduced to two buses and a 25 minutes interval service in the off peak. Council papers show the cost of the service is £162,000 per year (down from £429,000 in 2009). The council's enthusiasm for park and ride has waned significantly, with no details of the service on the council's website, merely a link to the news pages of the Arriva website. Nonetheless, the cost represents just a small part of the council's net parking income, which has fallen from £1.8m pre-Covid to an expected figure of £1.1m this year. |
