Netherlands operator Keolis has returned 246 battery-electric buses to Build Your Dreams (BYD) Europe for checks after a flood of complaints from drivers. This is the second time the buses from the Chinese manufacturer have been recalled since they entered service in the Netherlands eastern provinces of Gelderland and Overijssel (IJssel-Vecht) in December 2020, reported the Dutch magazine de Stentor in its online edition. Back then Keolis hailed the deployment, which replaced all the diesel buses in the region, saying it would reduce the operator's carbon footprint by around 16,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. The go-it-alone order from the branch of global transport provider Keolis attracted criticism from politicians and Dutch companies who said the changeover to battery-electrics should have been coordinated nationally. In an open letter, VDL chief Wim van der Leegte later questioned the wisdom of Keolis buying Chinese buses while Peking was imposing heavy import duties on Dutch buses being sold in China. In the first few months, the BYDs suffered from numerous technical gremlins but the makers said the problems have since been overcome. Trade unions earlier sent a letter to Keolis management threating further action if the gremlins were not solved by early January. |
