摘要: The French city of Montpelier has scrapped an ambitious plan to buy 51 hydrogen fuel-cell buses in favour of battery-electrics after officials said they are much cheaper to operate. The city said operating hydrogen buses would cost €3m (£2.51m) per year, compared with €500,000 (£418,700) for electric buses. It put the cost per km for running hydrogen buses at €0.95 (79p) and at €0.15 (12.5p) for electrics. The hydrogen project would have been one of the largest of its kind in France and has now been scrapped by city president Michaeel Delafosse. "Hydrogen technology is very promising," said Delafosse but added that the city had underestimated the operating costs involved. "The financial support was only for the investment, not running the system." "So, for the moment, we are giving up hydrogen buses, we will see in 2030 if hydrogen is cheaper." The hydrogen buses were to have been delivered between 2023 and 2025 and allocated to four new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes. The plan included installing an 800kg/day hydrogen production facility to be built by solar energy equipment supplier Energies du Sud and Hynamics, a subsidiary of the energy giant EDF group. The long-term aim was to boost the hydrogen economy in the city to allow delivery trucks and refuse collection vehicles to be converted to fuel-cell power.
