Thirty-five years on, Roger Holden was surprised to find this sticker still in place - and intact enough for him to recognise - in one of the quieter corners of the Greater Manchester bus network. It was one of thousands that Greater Manchester PTE applied to its bus stops in preparation for the tidal wave of changes that accompanied deregulation on October 26,1986. All of them carried the same message, "The information on this bus stop shows details of new service commencing October 26th. Prior to this date the original buses will continue to serve this stop." No year, just a month and day, as there presumably was a plan to peel them off again once D-Day had passed. If there was, then it missed this stop pole at the Sports Club on Longhurst Lane, Mellor which is served today by the hourly 375 on its way back from Mellor towards Marple and Stockport. That's a service supported by Transport for Greater Manchester which has replaced the stop flag in recent years but left the old notice in place. Roger wonders how many intending passengers have been perplexed by the message as each subsequent October has come around. And do any others survive elsewhere in the conurbation as TfGM prepares to bring the city region's buses back under its control in a franchising system? |
