For a second year, the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) has held the UK Bus & Coach Conference, as an online-only event over two days. A wide line-up of speakers included operators, politicians and representatives from tourism organisations, experts in behavioural change and the BBC. The organisers claim more than 400 people had registered for the event. The two days were entirely populated with interesting presentations and conversation, more than there is space for in this magazine. What follows are some of the highlights from this year's event. The CPT chief executive's welcome highlighted how 2021 had been a more difficult year than many had hoped, with too many businesses and valued colleagues lost. Graham Vidler said: "I can say with confidence that buses and coaches will continue to be vital to the UK's recovery from the pandemic." He also touched on the labour market issues, stating that one in ten jobs within the industry are vacant, which he partially blamed on unacceptable delays in licence issuing at one point. He said it is testament to the industry's flexibility and resilience that these problems are worked through with a generally low impact on passengers. Regarding Bus Service Improvement Plans (BSIPs), Vidler was encouraged to see operators and local authorities working closely together, creating ambitious plans collectively targeting patronage growth of 5% above pre-pandemic levels. |
