I read Phil Tonk's article (Buses February) on the appearance of buses with great interest. He doubts whether there is any specific research that alludes to people's attitudes to buses with clear route branding on a different route. Last year we carried out a comprehensive national survey on what passengers think about just about everything on their experience of buses. Many hundreds took part in spite of its length. We didn't ask what people's attitude were to incorrect branding on routes as many would not notice, but the survey did ask how often the passenger's main route, if branded, is a correctly branded bus. One quarter said they did not notice. Of those that did notice, 75% said the correct brand was used 'most of the time' or 'always/nearly always.' Included were some other questions on the issue which contributes to the discussion. We asked "Do you think individual route branding on the sides of buses plays an important part in keeping passengers and attracting new ones?" 47% said it does, 35% said no and 18% were undecided. The same question was asked regarding branding of the bus company. This had similar results to the previous question with just over half thinking it plays an important role. |
