In Global News (Buses December) mention is made of the intention of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority to abandon the remaining trolleybus system in the city of Boston. There is a tenuous link here with London - a subway. In London it was constructed by the London County Council in 1905/6 under Kingsway, and was used initially by single-decker trams. The tunnel was enlarged later, and double-decker tramcars ran through it from the early 1930s until the nights of April 5-6, 1952. In Boston, its transit subway is the Harvard Square Tunnel, used by several trolleybus routes, all of which are under threat of abandonment, q.v. Both the Boston tunnel and the London subway stations/stops utilise/ed central platforms, hence the Boston trolleybuses used therein have a central (US) offside passenger loading door. |
