Leicester City Council is consulting on the possibility of introducing a workplace parking levy, which so far has only been introduced in Nottingham. The scheme proposes a charge of £550 per annum per eligible car parking space, with a range of exemptions, including smaller employers, emergency services and unpaid volunteers, as well as initial discounts for some National Health Services premises. The council says the charge has been arrived at, by balancing the receipts needed for transport improvements, the impact on traffic, and the economic impact on employers and employees. It says that the funds raised will continue the work to provide bus priority, greener buses and better fares, currently undertaken with Transforming Cities funding that runs out in 2024. Part of the anticipated ten year income of £95m will also be used to improve walking and cycling routes. The 12-week consultation is open until March 13, 2022. The city council intends to consider the results later in the spring. If it decides to progress, it hopes to gain permission from the Secretary of State for Transport to introduce the scheme during 2023. |
