The neglected four bay Torquay Coach Station used by National Express will finally be demolished, with replacement facilities provided as part of a £3.36m project creating 38 jobs. The closed Lymington Road terminal building and cafe in Upton, north of the town centre, has stood vacant since mid-2019. It is remote from shops and hotels, on only one local bus route and attracts antisocial behaviour. In February 2019, Stagecoach relocated its Megabus long distance coach stop to Torquay Harbour -1.2 miles distant -served by all local buses and central to leisure facilities. The resort's Megabus services remain suspended since the first lockdown, while National Express currently operates a decreased three services to London and two to Birmingham daily. Work on five new light industrial units available to lease, a reduced three coach bays around a central island, waiting shelters, one accessible toilet, an information board, enhanced lighting and CCTV will start by March. Torbay Council is allocating £1.36m growth funding, while the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership is contributing £2m of Getting Building funding. |
