A fleet of 130 zero-emission double-decker buses will be introduced in Coventry next year as part of a £140m project to make Coventry the 'UK's first all-electric bus city.' The vehicles, of a make and model yet to be confirmed as Buses went to press, are expected to enter service in early 2023. Orders for further buses are expected at a later date. Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) secured £50m of funding from the Department for Transport to ensure every bus in Coventry is zero-emission. Oxford secured a similar funding award. Other bus companies operating in Coventry, including those running subsidised services, are likely to follow the investment from National Express Coventry. Around 300 electric buses are expected overall, with the target of an all- electric fleet by 2025. Charging infrastructure is being installed both at bus depots and at Pool Meadow bus station. Ten fully electric buses have been operating for National Express in Coventry since summer 2020. In 2019, Coventry City Council was awarded £2.2m from the government's Ultra-Low Emission Bus Scheme to fund the vehicles and supporting infrastructure. The depot near Pool Meadow bus station has solar panels fitted, ensuring much of the energy powering the buses is renewable. Each electric bus has its own charging station. |
