Cliff Beeton's name will be familiar to many readers as a quality photographer of the fleets of north Staffordshire where he lives, perhaps especially of the Potteries fleet which First inherited from Badgerline at the group's formation in 1995. This album, to Amberley's familiar format of two pictures to a page, runs chronologically from the early 1980s to early 2021, starting with Bristol VRs in National Bus Company (NBC) poppy red and ending with a Wright-bodied Volvo B7RLE transferred from Manchester to replace newer Alexander Dennis Enviro300s. These are the bookends to a colourful story in which NBC used Potteries to evaluate a Foden-NC and a Dennis Dominator, privatisation turned most of the fleet red and yellow, independent operators were acquired (and some of their identities were retained for a time), the company's operating area was expanded, and in First ownership it went from the adoption of a standard national livery to various colourful local brands. The pictures are all reproduced to a high standard and most have been taken in bright sunshine. |
