The author and enthusiast Robert Jowitt, famous for his idiosyncratic writing, remarkable photographs, Paris buses, all things King Alfred and so much more, died on Saturday, January 8, peacefully but unexpectedly at home in Ventnor, Isle of Wight. He would have been 80 this year. Robert was born in Wantage, but the family moved to Winchester shortly after the War where he formed an early connection with King Alfred Motor Services. Though in later life he moved around the country a bit, he never lost his close appreciation of the firm. He was a founder-member and continuing supporter of Friends of King Alfred Buses (FoKAB). But he was equally well-known for his characteristic (and in the bus world, unique) writing style and for amassing a remarkable fleet of pre-war Paris buses. He married Margaret in 1984 and they had four children, Kathleen, John, Robin and David, all of whom survive him. His writing took many forms but what interests us is the transport books, all of which were different from the norm. His first published work was A Desire of Tramcars, published in 1969. This was followed by the mould-breaking Paris vaut bien un Autobus/ Paris is well worth a Bus in 1970. This book, bi-lingual and written with his first wife Pat, contained a mass of beautifully-composed pictures of Paris, all of which featured the famous and antique pre-war open-back Paris buses, not always in the middle of the picture! In 1971 this was followed by A Silence of Trolleybuses. |
