A cold and frosty morning and I have been assured by Stagecoach Customer Relations that the 06:25 from Cumnock bus station, where I am now waiting, to Sanquhar does, in fact, continue through to Dumfries, although the timetable shows two separate journeys. The first bus to Kilmamock, from a deserted bus station, is driven by the same driver who dropped me here last evening. He waves madly at me and probably wonders what I am getting up to at this hour. My 246, the first of a two hourly frequency, arrives moments after, leaves promptly and we are soon out into open countryside. Our first stop is New Cumnock, which doesn't look very new but we do start to pick up early risers. We move into Dumfries and Galloway County and open moorland broken only by the inevitable wind farm. We have a fast drive momentarily interrupted by a lone sheep that has strayed into the carriageway. At Kelloholme, we move into a hillside housing estate and pick up more early workers before returning to the main road and racing alongside the railway. |
