Old Bill, the name the London General Omnibus Company gave to 1911 B Type double-decker B43 after its return from military service in France, was originally a character, a soldier, created by the World War One cartoonist Bruce Bairnsfather for the weekly Bystander magazine. The best remembered of these, published in 1915, shows Old Bill and a fellow trooper up their chests in a shell hole with ordnance going off all around them while Bill tells his comade, "Well, if you knows of a better 'ole, go to it." |
