Can there really be 59 editions of Buses Annual and Buses Yearbook sitting on my shelves? Indeed there are, and now they are joined by the 60th, the newly minted 2023 Yearbook. Editor Alan Millar celebrates with a copy of the original cover of 1964 reproduced alongside his introduction. He reminds us that the first edition had 12 articles and solely black and white photos filling its 96 pages, whereas there is now a choice of 21 articles in 2023, many with colour to illustrate them. There is the usual range of familiar names, plus others whose work may be familiar from elsewhere. Mark Lyons strays away from London to look at the remaining municipal operators, and how they have declined to just eight today. London itself features with Alan Millar charting events leading to the 1933 reorganisation of transport in the capital and its subsequent history, while on what was once the fringe of London Transport operations, Andrew Babbs charts the trials and tribulations of Arriva in Guildford. |
