Bangkok's Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) has announced it will hire private firms to operate 224 new electric buses by early 2023 to boost capacity and combat serious air pollution in the Thai capital. BMTA chief executive officer Kittikan Chomdoung Charuworapolkul told the Bangkok Post newspaper that the terms of reference (TOR) for electronic bidding would be finalized in August and the bidding could take place in September. The aim was to make tendering as transparent as possible. This assurance comes some years after Swedish makers Volvo and Scania stopped competing for BMTA orders in 2014 following numerous delays and claimed irregularities. Back then the two companies voiced doubts about local politicians being able to secure a fair bidding process. |
