The death of Sir William Wright makes it timely to focus this month's then-and-now comparisons with a look back at products with which what then was Robert Wright & Son began meeting the needs of British operators. Its big breakthrough came in 1982 when Maidstone Borough Council, which standardised on lightweight Bedford single-deckers, bought eight (a YNQ and seven longer YMTs) with Wrights' TT body. Another early convert was Arran Coaches, sole operator on the Firth of Clyde island of Arran, which in the 1970s had updated its fleet of around a dozen vehicles with new Plaxton and Duple-bodied Bedfords. NUS 333Y, delivered in April 1983, was a YNT with a 53-seat TT body similar to those supplied to Maidstone. With the new Ballymena factory allowing for greatly increased production, Wrights entered the 1990s with a growing range of products aimed at large fleets. Among these was GRT Bus Group, which merged with Badgerline in 1995 to become FirstBus and a major customer. |
