I have always been intrigued by the number of permutations of length, height and door configuration that can be made by combining one double-deck chassis with one make of body. Take the Wright Gemini 3-bodied Volvo B5TL, a type first seen in the autumn of 2013 when Go-Ahead London put into service a pre-production example with dual-door body. Two others for London followed soon after, plus a single-door equivalent built for evaluation by Lothian Buses in Edinburgh. These were all of 10.5m length; the first 11.4m ones were 25 single-door 79-seaters delivered to Lothian towards the end of 2014. The following summer found Lothian take 12 for its Airlink service to Edinburgh Airport, its first with the so-called Stealth Bomber front. |
