I was very interested in the item about Bristol Ashtrays on p79 of the latest (August) issue of Buses. Indeed, even before I had received my copy, friends had contacted me as they thought I would know the answer - which is as follows: For most of last century, the Bristol scroll emblem probably became the most widely recognised transport symbol after London Transport's bullseye/roundel. It first appeared in publicity for Bristol aeroplanes in 1910 and shortly afterwards could also be found on the radiators of early buses and lorries produced by the Bristol Tramways concern. The aeroplane and tramway businesses were among the enterprises of Sir George White, Bart. His empire included tramway operations around Britain; bus and tram services over a huge area of the West Country; motor vehicle building for operators nationwide - together with large-scale aircraft and aeroengine construction. |
