Your review of bus service cuts (Buses August) mentions the curtailment of High Peak's Derby - Manchester TransPeak route to operate only between Buxton and Matlock (apart from a few journeys). This is a prime example of a corridor where an integrated bus and rail service could bring significant benefits to passengers while containing operating costs. Rail could provide the Derby - Matlock and Buxton - Manchester services, with TransPeak filling the gap between the two. With ever-rising operating costs, and a squeeze on local and central government funding, surely it's time to end wasteful competition between bus and rail, and to provide properly integrated bus/rail services throughout the country, with through fares and widespread publicity. The real competition is not between bus and rail, but between public transport and the private car, and the rise in home-working and online shopping. |
