The letter in the May edition regarding the conductress who conducted carol singing on the run-up to Christmas reminded me of the first 12 years of my working life as a traffic clerk at Ribble's Preston HQ. I travelled daily on the 07:50 Blackpool-Preston with about eight other regular commuters. On Christmas Eve, one of our number, a civil servant, provided lovely homemade mince pies for us all (plus one for the driver and conductor). These were kept warm on the heater until I boarded midway at Kirkham, when we all tucked in. We had quite a few little adventures over the years, the one which sticks in my mind being the morning a new and very young driver touched a handcart laden with oranges on its way to Preston Market and hundreds of oranges cascaded down the slope. The regulars helped the crew recover the fruit and I always remember the market trader holding his head in his hands and shouting language just not heard in public these days. My explanation for my late arrival at work was deemed acceptable. |
