The death of Queen Elizabeth on September 8 has prompted us look at some coach designs that appeared in the year of her coronation in 1953 and were named accordingly. Market leader Duple called its new centre-entrance design for underfloor-engined chassis, announced in September 1953, the Elizabethan. It was built mainly on AEC's then new Reliance chassis, also on Leyland Tiger Cub, Royal Tiger, Guy Arab LUF, Daimler Freeline, Atkinson, Seddon and Sentinel. Wallace Arnold bought four Reliances with Elizabethan bodies in 1954 which came with memorable Leeds registrations SUG 2, 5, 7 and 8. SUG 7 had another royal connection, acquired by Strachan's Deeside Omnibus Service, based in Ballater and the operator serving the area around Balmoral. Alexander (Northern) bought Strachan's business in May 1965 and SUG 7 became its NAC51. |
