The first British tramwayage ended 60 years ago on September 2,1962 when motorbuses took over the last route on the 90-year-old Glasgow system. Year by year, the last cities with electric trams gave them up: Edinburgh and Dundee in 1956, Liverpool in 1957, Aberdeen in 1958, Leeds in 1959 and Sheffield in 1960. Completion of the replacement programme in Glasgow left only the seafront line in Blackpool until, 30 years later, Manchester Metrolink ushered in a new tramway era that has since also brought modern trams to Sheffield, Nottingham, Birmingham, Croydon, Edinburgh and Blackpool. |
