Owen of London SW4 was one of the UK's lesser known bodybuilders. It had been formed in the 1920s by Alfred Owen as a firm of motor agents and engineers, then in the 1930s was sold to naturalised Austrian Adolph Rapoport, who along with his son Jack were its directors on incorporation as A Owen Ltd in January 1950. Later it became a bodybuilder, producing in 1955 two 36-seat, rear-entrance bodies on Bedford SBG chassis for the Molins Machine Company of Saunderton, Buckinghamshire. These were the first of an eventual total of 29 built exclusively for Molins, mostly on Bedford SB chassis - the exceptions being a pair of Bedford D3LZ2 from 1958 and four Commer HX441 from 1961, one of which, 616 BYP, featured in a 1968 episode of the cult ITV series The Avengers. |
