A chronic shortage of drivers is bedevilling Britain's hard-pressed bus and coach operators. Eager to play a leading role in representing the sector as well as promoting the interests of hauliers, the Road Haulage Association (RHA) estimates that the shortfall is from 5,000 to 10,000. Shortages mean that services have to be cancelled, sometimes at short notice, vehicles have to be parked up because there is no-one who can take them out on the highway, and businesses are unable to grow to their full potential. Profitability is affected in an industry already suffering from squeezed margins. |
