The launch of Metrobus's Wright GB Kite Hydroliner fuel-cell single-deckers in Crawley and Gatwick is one of the latest milestones in the move to provide cleaner forms of propulsion on Britain's buses. But it is also worth reflecting on how long it has taken to get this far. Fifty years ago, Teesside Municipal Transport trialled a six-year-old Daimler Fleetline converted to run on liquid propane gas and branded The Clean Air Bus. The original Gardner 6LW engine in L470 (FXG 870E) — itself unusual as most Fleetlines had the larger 6LX — was replaced by an eight-cylinder Rolls-Royce B81G adapted from the petrol engines that the manufacturer supplied at the time to power fire engines. Calor Gas helped develop it along with the engine maker for evaluation on behalf of the Department of the Environment. |
