The West Devon market town of Okehampton with 6,000 residents gained a major transport boost from November 20 when its railway line reopened with associated bus service enhancements. Regular passenger trains last ran the 25 miles to Exeter in 1972, although quarry ballast trains continued until 2010 and Summer Sunday leisure trains operated 1997-2019. Over£40m of government funding has enabled daily Dartmoor Line passenger trains to resume two-hourly, doubling from mid-2022. Devon County Council also increased supported Dartline bus route 118 (Tavistock-Okehampton) to hourly with alternate journeys restoring links to Okehampton station, but reducing those via the hospital. |
