Flixbus has teamed up with two German companies and an unnamed 'major European bus manufacturer' to push forward with plans to develop hydrogen fuel-cell-powered express coaches. The operator will work with technology specialists Freudenberg and ZF Friedrichshafen as a member of the Hyfleet research project. The group aims to come up with a fuel cell system to replace conventional diesel drives within three years. Flixbus announced back in 2019 that it was fettling a fleet of fuel-cell powered coaches for use in Europe but little had been heard of the plans since then. After several trials, the German transport giant also said battery-electric-powered long-haul coaches were not feasible owing to the long charging times and the cost-intensive charging structure needed. |
