It's the best part of half a century since the sitcom On the Buses was on primetime television, but it seems that its characters could live on for another five decades. Blakey, the dictatorial inspector played by the late Stephen Lewis ("real" name Cyril Blake), has appeared on part of a mural on the corner of The Cut and Cornwall Road, close to Waterloo station and the Go-Ahead London electric bus base, along with an artist's impression of a New Routemaster. Mark Lyons spotted it on his recent travels on our behalf and points out that it shows it operating on route 44, which serves Victoria and not Waterloo. He thinks this might be a nod to mayor of London Sadiq Khan, who frequently references his father driving said route. But on a New Routemaster? Aren't they forever associated with his predecessor as mayor, today's prime minister? |
