Nearly 60 years ago, in September 1962, front-line vehicles on the interurban coastal route 12 between Brighton and Eastbourne were Southdown's "Queen Mary" Leyland Titan PD3s with fully-fronted Northern Counties bodies. That was when Iain MacGregor photographed an 18-month-old example paused at Rottingdean to the east of Brighton, its front advertisements for the London Evening News adding proof to the idea that Brighton and Hove are as much London by the sea as Sussex by the sea. By 1967, Southdown would own 285 of these double-deckers, the largest collection of PD3s in a single fleet. The last of them had panoramic windows and curved upper deck windscreens that either made them more modern or spoilt a classic look, depending on your point of view. |
