Four University Transportation Centers, (composed, at the time, of twelve universities in total), worked with local and regional partners to develop and deliver a simultaneous multi-university online freight seminar during AY 2010-11. The goal of the project was to foster collaboration among these various stakeholders, share information, and provide university students and practicing professionals with the tools they need for successful careers in this important transportation area. The pilot project successfully demonstrated that courses, which cover specialty areas such as freight transportation, can be offered by more universities with transportation programs if we effectively exploit UTC resources collectively. The project described in this paper investigated the feasibility of this approach by developing a graduate seminar, which brought together faculty and students from several universities and professional experts from four separate regions in a video-based, real-time format. The project was proposed as a first step toward developing a Multi-UTC program of courses that can be accessed by students at each individual UTC for course credit in their graduate transportation programs. |
