My local bus route is operated by Trent Barton's Derby depot. Like Adrian Healey (You Write, December), I'm frustrated when my bus doesn't turn up because it hasn't got a driver. Unlike him, I don't think that this is only due to bad management of Wellglade's Derby depot. I know that more drivers have left Derby than from other depots, but I put that down to there being more alternative options here than in other areas. I do know that the problem is nationwide and that some places are much worse off than Derby. Most of the drivers I know are too busy working overtime to keep the show on the road to worry about their future. Mr Healey is right to say that bus driving has its problems. One friend says that after the (welcome) increase in the national minimum wage, bus driving no longer has a big enough margin above it to make up for the hassle of shift work and dealing with the public, so he won't be going back. Another is now driving a lorry doing local deliveries 08:00-17:00. In the last month, Trent Barton and Kinch have agreed an above-inflation pay increase for all drivers and engineers, which should help. |
