I was fascinated to read Michael Dryhurst's Anniversaries article (Buses July) but think certain pertinent information needs to be added. The first relates to the three AA Class double-deckers of 1961 which spent their lives in Waterford. These buses were never intended for Hill of Howth replacements. However, there was an agreement that AEC would supply buses for the ex-GNR area, and presumably an intimation that three buses might be required. The roads around the hill were utterly unsuitable for buses over approximately 2km between Stella Maris and the Baily PO. The solution was to take three PD2/1s from the 1949 'Capetown' batch: R438-40 were given a full overhaul and equipped with new differentials to enable them to tackle the horrific hills, especially that out of Howth. They were 26' long and 7'6" wide, the smallest buses available in the existing fleet. One operated on each side of the hill, with one in reserve. |
