Ed O'Neill has previously produced books dealing with Coras Iompair Eireann (CIE) single- and double-deckers in the 1970s and 1980s, but this one - the first of two volumes devoted to all of CIE's Leyland Titans - goes into much greater detail and has brought out new essential background information going back to the first double-deckers to be operated in Ireland. Although there are nearly 300 photographs, mainly black and white, it is not just another picture book with extended captions containing little information. There is the right level of detail with sufficient background contextual information to satisfy the curious reader. When CIE was formed in 1945, it absorbed the bus operations of the Dublin United Tramway Company and the Great Southern Railway (GSR). The GSR had acquired the Irish Omnibus Company in 1929 and Titans purchased by all three of these operators are covered in the book, as also are prewar double-deckers in Northern Ireland. |
