For many years, the overlap of interest between stamp collecting and transport enthusiasm was recognised by a regular feature in this magazine on stamps and buses, written under the pen name of Philaticus. Howard Piltz, whose interests embrace philately and all modes of transport, has carried on the tradition with a series of books, of which this is the fourth. The colourful nature of postage stamps makes it a visually attractive combination, and Piltz and Pen & Sword have produced a good balance of words and illustrations. The latter benefit greatly from being printed on glossy paper rather than the matt variety the publisher uses for most of its bus titles. These are grouped in six geographical chapters, starting in the British Isles and ending in the Americas, sandwiched between an introduction and an explanatory chapter (repeated in each book in the series) about the practicalities of building up and maintaining a stamp collection. |
