Funding of around £30m has been granted for 38 zero emission battery electric buses for Foyle Metro in Derry-Londonderry. All vehicles are expected to go into passenger service in 2023. Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon made the announcement during a virtual address to the United Nations COP26 Global Climate Conference in Glasgow. All the vehicles will be battery electric buses supplied by Wrightbus. Most of them, 28 in total, will be single-deckers, alongside ten double-deckers. The vehicles will feature WiFi, USB chargers and audiovisual next stop announcements. The Northern Ireland Department for Infrastructure, alongside Translink, has also revealed the first of 80 Wright Electroliner double-deckers which are due to be in passenger service in Spring 2022. The vehicles are part of a £74m investment in 100 zero emission buses, which also includes 20 Hydroliner fuel cell double-deckers. |
