Lottery funding helped the North East Bus Preservation Trust complete the restoration of its 1966 open-top MCW-bodied Leyland Atlantean in time for it to be displayed in South Shields on June 5. The timing was crucial, as Tyne & Wear PTE 118 (KBB 118D) has been brought back to the special livery it wore for the Queen's silver jubilee in 1977. It was one of 28 similar vehicles delivered to Newcastle Corporation 56 years ago with Alexander-style windscreens and front mouldings. In 1970 it was transferred to Tyneside PTE when it acquired the Newcastle and South Shields municipal fleets and the PTE changed name in 1974 when the Tyne & Wear county was created. It was converted to open-top after being deroofed in Wallsend and transported the legendary Muhammad Ali when the boxer visited Newcastle and South Shields in 1977. |
