Trolleybuses served Ipswich for 40 years from 1923 to 1963, a system so comprehensive that although the last trams were replaced in 1926 it took until 1950 before there were any municipal motorbuses in the town. Nothing like that happened anywhere else in Britain. Such also was the support for local industry that all of the trolleybuses it bought up to 1940 were built in Suffolk, either by Garretts of Leiston or Ransomes Sims & Jefferies in Ipswich. Ransomes built Ipswich's first 41 double-deckers, and the last of these, with a particularly handsome Massey body, lasted long enough to feature in several photographs in this book. |
