That John Trayner ended up in the bus industry at all is largely down to fate. In 1975, having left school with no formal qualifications, his parents suggested that he should gain a trade. The choices boiled down to London Transport or British Gas and, in September 1975 he and his twin brother presented themselves to the recruitment officer at London Transport's Experimental Shop at Chiswick. While his brother signed up to be a panel beater, Trayner had aspirations to be an electrician on the underground. These proved short-lived, as the medical revealed that he was colour blind. As an alternative he was offered a four-year apprenticeship as a fitter and turner at Chiswick Works. |
