Andrew Stopford is impressed by the artwork that was displayed in three billboards in the centre of Stockport, and especially by one showing the town's bus station not far away that is currently being redeveloped into something that Transport for Greater Manchester promises will be much better than its demolished predecessor. If you've been there or seen photographs of it, you'll be aware that the large bus station lies at a lower level between the imposing spans of the viaducts carrying the main line railway and the A6 road to and from Manchester. The bus station and Daw Bank depot feature in The Last Carnival, locally raised artist Helen Clapcott's Lowry-esque depiction of an annual procession making its way up the A6. |
