Cagliari, the regional capital of the Italian island of Sardinia, this year celebrates 70 years of trolleybus operation. The first route, line 5, began operation on December 22,1952, over the next 12 years the service expanded to cover much of the central area. The network was also extended to the outlying areas of Quartu Sant'Elena and Selargius. As with many British towns, some of these lines replaced a previous tramway. From the late 60s the network began to shrink, so that by the beginning of the 1980s, only line 5 which runs from north east to south west, and the line out to Quartu Sant'Elena and Selargius remained. Some unused overhead does still exist around the city centre. Line 5 also closed in the 1990s, but at the end of the decade was revived with extensions at both ends. |
