Bus Recovery Grant for England will now continue until the end of June, the Government announced on February 17. As with previous extensions, this was less than the minimum 28 days notice to local authorities plus the 42 days notice required by the Traffic Commissioners (TC), to make changes to local bus registrations. The late notice was anticipated by the commissioners, who issued a statement on February 9, temporarily reducing the TC's notice period to 28 days, because "the uncertainty over funding may result in operators choosing to cancel or vary service registrations before a final decision on funding has been made". However, most operators seem to have held their nerve, with no evidence of mass cancellations submitted during February. The government says that the three-month extension - which also includes Local Transport Fund payments to local authorities - will cost £80m. The government has also announced the continuation of the Bus Fare Cap Grant to the same date. £75m will support the £2 maximum single fare, with press releases now quoting 146 operators as taking part, up from the original 130. Those not yet participating are also being offered the chance to join the scheme. The extensions to both schemes mean that the new expiry dates will be after local elections are held in much of England in early May. |
