摘要: You'll doubtless be familiar with the complaint that London buses in period films and television shows are frequently too new - and invariably too Routemaster-ish - for the year that the story is supposed to take place. But what I'm about to relate is the opposite. One that's up to 15 years too early. If you watched A Spy Among Friends, the excellent six-part ITV drama about the unmasking of the double agent Kim Philby that was broadcast in December and January, you may have been as impressed as I was with the buses that were there - along with cars, taxis, vans, shopfronts and fashions - to tell us that this was happening in 1963. Much of it was set in London, with archive colour footage of street scenes complemented by the clever appearance of the same preserved London Transport RT-class AEC Regent, RT1431 from the Ensignbus heritage fleet, sometimes playing more than one bus in quick succession. There also was an on-board sequence in which its distinctive fixtures and fittings added to the atmosphere. Except, and don't let this spoil your enjoyment of the story, RT1431 is one of the two survivors of the 120 RTs that differed greatly from all others by virtue of their five-bay Cravens bodies with London features (especially the cab) grafted on to the Sheffield coachbuilder's standard product. None of the red ones ran in London after 1956, when the class was withdrawn as non-standard, and it is preserved in the livery - red with cream band and cream upper deck window surrounds - it wore when new in 1949 and which it lost by the time of its first overhaul in 1953.
