New research by Dutch consultancy Chatrou CME Solutions charting city bus sales in Europe (including the UK, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland) has found that more than 4,000 electric buses were registered for use in 2022. Market leader was Yutong, with 479 buses, closely followed by BYD/Alexander Dennis with 465 buses. BYD achieved a further 322 registrations on its own account. Other large sales were achieved by Mercedes-Benz (405), Iveco-Heuliez (347), VDL (344), Solaris (342), Volvo (232) and MAN (230). No other manufacturer had a market share of more than 5%. Of the total, 99 were hydrogen powered, with the three market leaders being Solaris (54), Caetano (16) and Wrightbus (11), giving the latter an 11.1% share of the market. The country with the most electric buses registered in 2022 was the UK, with 685 vehicles. Next largest were Germany (581) and France (549), with the Nordic countries and Finland occupying the next four places. Trends over the last ten years reveal the same three countries to be in top place, with the Netherlands occupying fourth position. In these countries, electric buses now represent 11-14% of city fleets. |
