摘要: There are many ownership structures for bus operators in the UK; family firms, independents, municipals, big groups, foreign public transport authorities and more besides, but one of the most unusual I've come across is a bus operation run by a university. Owned by the University of Hertfordshire, Uno was the 2022 winner of the UK Bus Award for Best Independent Operator, with its managing director since August 2009, Jim Thorpe, taking an award for Leader of the Year. Deciding to pay the company a visit in light of this recent success, I caught pride-liveried Alexander Dennis Enviro400 259 (YX67 VFS) operating on the 614 to Queensbury, a route which conveniently passes the operator's depot. It's certainly easy for many of Uno's drivers to commute to work, and the depot has its own stop on the route's next stop announcements. Uno has been operating commercial bus services since 1992, though its origins go back to the late 1980s. What was then Hatfield Polytechnic started a student-only shuttle between Hatfield and Wall Hall College near Watford. This service, originally contracted out to a local coach company, was brought in house in September 1990. A second service was added between campuses at Hertford and Hatfield, since existing public transport did not provide an effective connecting service. The original service was numbered P2.
