A type I have not featured until now is the Optare Metrocity - essentially the Versa with a reduced front overhang. It was designed with London in mind, with a dual-door, 10.6m version on display at Euro Bus Expo 2012 and illustrated soon after in January 2013 Buses. The first buyer was Epsom Coaches-owned Quality Line, with 12 of the shortest 9.9m V990MC version in 25-seat, dual-door form bought for use on route S1 (Lavender Fields-Banstead) in 2014. In addition to these, it acquired a 13th later in the year in the form of ex-demonstrator YJ14 BFY. In the meantime, the 10.6m Metrocity had become YD63 UZL, as London United OC1, although that company did not retain it and in 2015 it too passed to Quality Line (also owned by RATP Dev), as OML20240. Something not known at the time, however, was that it would remain unique, as no others of that length were built in diesel-engined, dual-door form. |
