| 摘要： | Ron Akehurst was a London Transport and latterly London Country conductor for a month shy of 27 years, first on the red Central Area buses at Cricklewood garage, later on the green Country Area buses and Green Line coaches at Epping and the new town of Harlow. An impressive achievement for an ex-seaman who joined on what was supposed to be a temporary arrangement for ex-services personnel. When he started in January 1946, the 36-year-old was paid £3.90, plus an unspecified war wage, for a 48hr six-day week, the basic pay rate equating to £129 a week or £6,700 a year at today's values. His experiences rubbed off on his son Laurie whose childhood interest in buses was fed by his father's stories, prompting him to ask many questions, start his own working life in a London Transport office and go on to become a published author of several informative books, of which this is his latest and most personal. |
