Any hopes that the current three-month extensions to government funding would be placed on a more stable footing were dashed by the failure of Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to mention buses at all in his Budget on March 15. The Urban Transport Group warned: "Without a funding deal for bus beyond June, there will be another wave of bus service cuts." It contrasted the situation with the medium-term financial settlement granted to Transport for London, and highlighted that the potential for bus service withdrawals "would also undermine the benefits of the recent £2 fare offer". It says the government needs to "to put in place a long term, enhanced and devolved approach to funding local public transport services" and suggests that it is "devolved to those transport authorities that wish to take responsibility for it". The Confederation of Passenger Transport's CEO Graham Vidler welcomed the freeze on fuel duty as offering "short-term relief to bus and coach operators grappling with rising costs" but also warned that "the sector needs a stable, long-term funding settlement to encourage more people to choose bus and coach over car". |
