Volvo Buses will close its bodybuilding factory in the Polish city of Wroclaw next year in a bid to return the company's European bus-making business to profitability. The Wroclaw plant, which opened in 1996 and saw major investment only six years ago when it switched to integral production, assembles electric and diesel-driven city and inter-city buses as well as luxury coaches. The company announced that it would apply a new business model in Europe that has met with success in several other markets. One example is at Carrus Delta in Finland where it manufactures double-deckers to customer order. Around 100 vehicles have been built there since February 2020. "Our business in Europe has been generating losses for years. With this business model that we already today apply successfully in many markets, we will improve profitability and secure our long-term competitiveness," said Volvo Buses president Anna Westerberg. "Consequently, Volvo Buses has decided to close its bodybuilding factory in Wroclaw, Poland, in the first quarter of 2024," she said, adding that the Wroclaw premises will be taken over by Swedish-based Vargas Holding for development into a new industrial site. |
